Description
Red sandalwood primarily grows in the southern Eastern Ghats mountains of South India. Though it differs from the white sandalwood renowned for its fragrance, it is still referred to as “sandalwood” due to its scientific name, Pterocarpus santalinus. The wood is highly prized for its rich red color and has a very subtle scent. In China, it is utilized to craft exquisite traditional furniture, and historically, it was often accessible only to royalty and aristocracy. Red sandalwood finds its place in traditional herbal medicine as an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, and tonic. Some also believe that it possesses aphrodisiac properties.
This exquisite strand of red sandalwood prayer beads can be worn as a necklace, elegantly wrapped around the wrist as a bracelet, or utilized for japa mantra chanting practice. The beads are meticulously strung together with traditionally knotted thread, gracefully finished with a flowing red tassel. Red sandalwood, often referred to as rosewood, is a prized component of ritual malas, renowned for its ability to promote relaxation and reduce excessive thoughts and nervous energy.
Malas symbolize the eternal cycle of existence and are cherished by various deities. Sandalwood holds special significance for Shiva and Ganesha, the Lord of Success and the remover of obstacles. Malas are frequently worn for purification, protection, and uplifting the mind, body, and spirit.
